Over 2 million people in London have English as a second Language which means that in every 8 persons at least 2 will be learning English. If classes continue to be underfunded and inaccessible, people with English as a second language can become marginalised. SUSO together with Citizens UK are taking action to raise the profile and the importance of ESOL/EAL for a healthy well functioning society.

ESOL/EAL is essential for the following reasons:

  1. Social justice and equality: learning English gives everyone the opportunity to thrive
  2. Democracy: learning English enables people to participate in the political life
  3. Education and Work: Learning English helps people progress academically, find work, progress at work and organise for their rights at work.

Language teaching is essential to give migrants the opportunity to thrive in our city. Thus this action is an opportunity for us to raise the profile of EAL/ESOL and to create positive narratives about it.
